Should I Continue Physical Therapy If It Hurts?

Physical therapy should never cause real pain. However, it is normal to feel some discomfort and pain during the process. If you start to experience real pain, it is time to stop your physical therapy regimen and consult with your therapist. Certified physical therapists are trained to ensure that physical therapy does not hurt.

The goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain, not cause more. When you first start physical therapy, you may feel some soreness in your muscles and joints. This is normal and should go away after a few sessions. As you progress, you will do deep exercises and stretches that may exceed the limits of your comfort, but they should never be painful. It is important to talk to your physical therapist during each step of rehabilitation so that they can adjust their techniques if you start to feel pain. If the procedure is unpleasant or too painful, the therapist may suggest applying ice to your muscles after therapy to reduce some of the symptoms that may occur.

If you don't follow your recovery program at home, it's hard for your therapist to know why your symptoms aren't improving or why they're getting worse and make any necessary adjustments. Pain in the back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, feet and more can be relieved with the help of physical therapy. The Manhattan Physical Therapy and Pain Center has an excellent track record of success in treating back pain caused by sprains, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, spondylolisthesis or whiplash injuries. At Mid-County Physical Therapy, we understand that physical therapy can be discouraging if it causes pain. We strive to ensure that our patients never experience severe pain during or after a physical therapy session. Our team of certified physical therapists will do everything they can to ease the pain and help you find relief.
